Parsons Place on Channel 13 News
Employees in town for the Choice Hotels International Convention spent their day renovating Parsons Place, a downtown Las Vegas facility dedicated to helping homeless get back on their feet. In addition to the fresh coat of paint, more than 200 volunteers completed repairs to the bathrooms, installing new medicine cabinets, sinks and faucets.
“It makes me feel great,” said Choice Hotels Area Director Amanda Michael. “I am from St. Louis and I like to volunteer there, but it’s nice when we can go out and hit some other cities and make a difference.” The crew at Parsons Place was impressed by the hospitality crew’s quick sprucing.
“It looks just totally different,” said Bryiant Williams, program director at Parsons Place. “It looks refreshing.”
The effort marks the first face-lift Parsons Place has received since it opened more than 30 years ago.

Community Partnership for Opening Doors Collaboration

NHSSN helped establish a new collaboration with other non-profits organizations called, “The Community Partnership for Opening Doors,” which has a simple goal of moving individuals and families from (1) homelessness to (2) affordable rentals to (3) permanent home ownership. The Collaboration has been going for about 6 months and has shown to be highly successful. Over 7 families and 2 young adults have been helped in this Program so far. More referrals are taking place each month. Below is a description of how the Collaboration of non-profit organizations works:

Family Promise provides rental assistance to families, referred to them by the homeless assisting agencies such as the Shade Tree, Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Nevada Jewish Family Service Agency, andAFAN. These families are then placed in rentals at NHSSN. Family Promise provides the rental assistance on a sliding scale of need for up to six months. Family Promise also provides a dedicated Case Manager who works with the families at NHSSN weekly on issues such as finding employment and finances so they can fully afford the rental amount at the end of the six months. At the end of six months the families are all employed and paying 100% of their rent to NHSSN. They then begin the process to apply for new home through Habitat of Humanity for a zero percent interest-only loan. During the Collaboration Program the Las Vegas Rescue Mission provides weekly food boxes to the NHSSN clients, Jewish Family Service Agency provides fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as, mental health counseling for free, and the YMCA provides a free 6 month membership to use their facilities, which include child care services. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides individuals to work with the children and youth in the schools on a weekly basis. Nevada Microenterprise Initiative addresses the needs of those self-employed for opportunities to develop their own small business. Moreover, In December of 2011 Family Promise gave six of the families currently in the Program newly restored vehicles.

Needless to say, NHSSN is proud to be a part of this visionary collaboration.
